Recordings

The artistic career of the extraordinary author and the Portuguese guitar interpreter Carlos Gonçalves, is divided in two different stages:

THE FIRST ONE 1958-1999
The first one from 1958 to 1999. In the second part of this first stage 1968-1999 with hardly 30 years old, he starts a phase of collaboration with AMALIA RODRIGUES taking part in the group directed by FONTES ROCHA and collaborating in almost all of the artist albums.

Since eighties, replaces FONTES ROCHA like director forming with PINTO VARELA, JORGE FERNANDO, JOEL PINA and, with LELO NOGUEIRA more later, the regular accompaniment group of AMÁLIA, being this age the most prolific years of CARLOS GONÇALVES and having 28 own recordings like accompaniment of AMÁLIA.

Can have a special mention among all this recordings, the albums: “Lágrima” and “Gostava de ser quem era” recorded with his own compositions exclusively and for which the own AMÁLIA written the poetry and where this collaboration was documented forever.

THE SECOND STAGE 1999-2004
The second stage of the artistic career of CARLOS GONÇALVES, starts after the death of AMÁLIA RODRÍGUES (1999) since that moment is required constantly for several Fado artists, like accompaniment in the recording of their albums and also like director of these albums. Collaborating with international artists in recordings of Portuguese music too.

And is in this second stage, after dedicate all his professional life to great artists sacrificing his own ones, when he starts a new facet like soloist of the Portuguese guitar, following the advice of the Portugal culture personalities, friends and fans, who know and value his career and who wish to consecrate him like one of the maximum exponents of the Portuguese guitar.

Is for that reason that after dozens of recordings accompanying and directing to great artists in the most important record companies, Carlos Gonçalves decides to record his first album like soloist of the Portuguese guitar, “A ESSENCIA DA GUITARRA POTUGUESA” an album with his own compositions and of another composers and interpreters. Is in this album, where is possible to appreciate in full extension the technique, the creativity, the sensitivity and the personal taste of the man, the guitarist and the author.
